Descendants of African slaves should receive reparations in a manner comparable to those granted to other historically wronged groups. Similar to how reparations have been codified for descendants of Native Americans, victims of the Holocaust, and individuals affected by World War II internment camps, African Americans whose ancestors endured slavery are entitled to similar redress. These reparations should acknowledge the lasting economic, social, and emotional harm inflicted on enslaved Africans and their descendants over generations. The framework for such reparations should be constructed thoughtfully, taking into account the precedents set by other compensation programs for marginalized or persecuted groups. The forms of reparations could include financial compensation, educational opportunities, or other systemic reforms aimed at addressing the deep-rooted inequities resulting from slavery and its aftermath. Ultimately, these measures would not only be a step toward justice but also a vital part of national healing and the continued pursuit of equity and equality for African American communities.
As an Irish descendent, I would be eligible for reparations, too. However, I donât feel this would accomplish anything meaningful except to put a further strain on the taxpayers who are already suffering. Why now? Would it have been preferable to send all the actually affected people back to their country of origin? Just to have their kinsmen do it again?
There has been ample time for true healing if it was desired for the groups affected. Minorities have been favored for receiving educational and small business loans and general preferential treatment - which I feel is counterproductive to a merit based system. Where it has gotten us is vastly underqualified workforce and America and its businesses have suffered as a result. The people who are willing to become educated have nearly limitless resources so when they choose not to take advantage of this it is clear itâs not a priority. This is a country of opportunity but it canât just be handed to you.
Why is it you are still an âAfricanâ American? How many generations does it take? Reparations might seem nice and shiny to get some folding money but it will not encourage entrepreneurship or ambition which this country desperately needs. So, letâs say you get a check for $10k. Youâll spend it and it will be gone and youâll still be resentful the morning after and possibly asking for more. If you are still suffering from slavery, it is a choice you have made and the rest of the country need not participate.
Too much involved with this process if it was going to happen it wouldâve happen at the 100 year mark
Just wondering your opinion on who would be expected to pay reparations?
Thanks
Why is there no way to down-vote??
Newsflash: Blacks arenât the only ones to have experienced slavery.
No. Lincoln gave freed slaves 40 acres, a mule and supplies for several years after the Civil War. Reparations were paid at the end of slavery. Nothing else is owed. You can actually look this fact up on Google.
How do you decide exactly who recieves the benefit? Black slave owners were common in the south as well, so do decendents of those people still recieve reparations? A small portion of the population owned slaves, so who has to pay the reparations, those who never owned slaves (which happens to be all of us alive at this very moment)? What about those who are from multiple generations of bastards who never knew their family lineage like myself, do we have to pay too?
This proposal is truly racist at its core by defining a category of americans as âAfrican Americansâ as if they are a monolith that all experienced the same things. âAfrican Americansâ is an arbitrary categorization based exclusively on race and does not represent any real category of individuals.
Its also a pathetic attempt to guilt money out of productive people to give to the unproductive, excuse-making, parasites.
It has already been done, to the former slaves AND the descendants of slaves. Not counting the over 500 thousand who died to end slavery.
Irish, Chinese, Mexican, African American, and so many others
But how would this be paid for?
African Americans already received reparations⌠20 acres and a mule. This needs to stop⌠native Americans received nothing but their women and children rapped, scalped, slavery and deathâŚ
Reparations were paid directly to the people who were affected in those camps during WW11. They also put Germans, Russians and Italians and any other nationality that we were fighting against.
I donât understand why you feel you are entitled to money from this generation. Iâm assuming that you think only white people should pay the reparations .We had nothing to do with slavery and shouldnât be forced to spend our hard earned money on reparations.
Iâm assuming that you think only white people should pay the reparations
Every black person has had exactly the same opportunities as the rest of us.
I have worked since the age of 15 and I didnât have âwhite privilegedâ.
The America I grew up in was built by Black and White Americans alike.
The idea of reparations to people who were never slaves from people who were never slave owners is absurd. Reparations were paid to slaves at the end of slavery and was ended by democrat vote.
As long as we continue to say there is divide, there will be divide. If we stopped talking about a difference in skin color, the difference would fade away.
If Black Americans want to be upset by the wrongs they have personally encountered, I strongly recommend looking at the party a majority of Black Americans have voted for in their lifetime the party that promised everything and provided nothing but hate, divide and a constant state of trying to hold Black Americans in divide with the rest of the country. Be the change you want to see.
I would like reparations for everything Iâve lost in the last 4 years of my life. I will go about this by voting in the party I believe will advance my causes, I will be an active person to help make sensible laws and help undo unsensible ones, and I will work harder if I want more in life than I currently have, or I will be satisfied with what I have achieved.
This is America. Your future is in your hands, not in the handout.
All current and former slaves should be paid reparations by their current or former owners. Descendants of slaves, who have benefited from 60 years of Affirmative Action get the opportunity to quit whining
Look up Liberia, the USA could do something similar today-reunification.
Liberia is the only Black state in Africa never subjected to colonial rule and is Africaâs oldest republic. It was established on land acquired for people who formerly had been enslaved in the United States by the American Colonization Society, which founded a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. In 1824 the territory was named Liberia, and its main settlement was named Monrovia, which is the present-day capital. Liberian independence was proclaimed in 1847, and its boundaries were expanded. The country enjoyed relative stability until a rebellion in 1989 escalated into a destructive civil war in the 1990s that did not fully cease until 2003. The countryâs first post-conflict elections, held in 2005, were noteworthy for the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to the presidency, as she was the first woman to be elected head of state in Africa.
Reparations was paid already ( Lincoln)
They government paid when he was president.
Also all races were slaves at one time.
They Irish were the first slaves in America.
This kind of thinking and reasoning is the reflection of racism.
This is the best reply yet! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are better united.
Itâs actually the other way around. Black Americans are the wealthiest and most successful black people in the world, and itâs because the USA has already performed reparations.
On the other hand, innocent Americans continue to pay reparations every time a black person commits a violent crime - that is an indirect consequence of slavery. To suggest that black people are owed more by the USA is beyond incorrect. It is cruel.
Reparations for All. Not raced based as we have all been subjected to slavery at this point.
