On Welfare? Then Can’t Vote

The 16th Amendment authorized Congress to collect income taxes regardless of the source of income, putting government bureaucrats whose main source of income is other people’s taxes into the same category as taxpayers whose taxes pay for bureaucrats’ salaries. 24th Amendment, which was ratified in 1964, made individuals who failed to pay taxes eligible to vote and created a class of people whose only job was to vote for those who promised them more of other people’s money.

This is just rude. My son’s father died and that’s how I receive our child support. I shouldn’t be allowed to vote because of that reason?

I don’t feel that taking away the rights of people who need government help is the way to go. I do feel that the welfare system needs to be re-organized to be more of a temporary helping hand and not a carrier choice.

I’m sorry for your loss. However, unless your son’s father died in the line of duty, in which case the proposal doesn’t apply to you, your child support should be coming from the insurance, not from taxes. The initial proposal doesn’t exempt those who sacrificed their lives or health for the country, but the author of the proposal agreed that it was a mistake not to think about these groups.

So I should magically become unchronically ill. Magically get out of having a genetic degenerative disease for which there is no cure? An illness that destroys and distorts my spine? Think you need to go have a rethink.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. The way the country was originally set up, the House of Representatives was elected by popular vote. The people on welfare- if there were any, would be allowed to vote for the representatives. That made the house really the voice of the people. The Senators were appointed by the state legislatures. The state legislators will generally be people of some affluence and competence. They were intended to serviceable work against the idea of people being able to vote themselves a meal ticket. There’s a lot of talk these days about having the president elected by popular vote. That would complete the ticket. People could vote themselves all the benefits they wanted and there would be nothing to stop them. The way to solve the problem of people on welfare voting themselves benefits is to repeal the amendment that made the Senators recipients of a popular vote.

Perhaps an alternative that would work is a poll tax or in lieu of that some community service for the day
