SNAP Benefits/Food Stamps should not be able to be used for Junk Food!
Go to any Walmart, or grocery store on the first of the month. You’ll witness a store full of over weight families stocking up on soda, chips, and pizza rolls.
Just as you are not able to buy alcohol and cigarettes with SNAP, The same should be true for junk food. Taxpayer’s money should not be spent enabling the destruction of health in America
What exactly is classified as “junk food”? I know people who are overweight but don’t eat what’s typically labeled as junk food. If you’re leading this campaign, who do you believe has the authority to decide which foods fall into that category? Considering that much of the food sold in the U.S. is highly processed and unhealthy, what would happen if a law were passed restricting people from buying these so-called junk foods? Do you also think those affected should receive additional benefits to afford healthier options?
Yes, SNAP recipients should absolutely receive additional benefits to afford healthful foods, although, in my opinion, healthful food should not cost more than ultra-processed junk food.
Soda, Chips, processed chicken nuggets/strips, ice cream and other deserts should be prohibited. My job used to be bringing clients to grocery shop. We were not allowed to tell them what to get. It’s disgusting on what they purchase considering most of them are diabetic or pre diabetic.
No additional funds are needed. Fresh chicken, pork and beef is cheaper than a bag of processed chicken strips, Marie Callender’s chicken pie, or hungry man dinners.
I disagree with your comment about fresh ingredients being cheaper. And again who has the authority to decide what qualifies as junk food? Additionally, were the people you took shopping capable of cooking for themselves? What if they didn’t know how to cook? But I do not disagree in prohibiting certain items. However, it’s important to consider whether these individuals had the same cooking skills and knowledge as most people do.
Let me start off by saying this and I say this respectfully okay Most people like myself that are DISABLED And also on a fixed income and can barely get any help. What’s the weather and would love to purchase healthy foods and all organic? And all the good stuff.Well, guess what?Grocery prices have went through the roof. Also as a person on Snap that only Get.
135 a month AN SINGLE So you tell me how I am supposed to buy all Organic and healthy options? I’m not saying I eat unhealthy Because I don’t but who are you to judge what people buy With their snap benefits because unlike myself that is on snap I also pay taxes to be able to get that help so Any response?
To that. Because people that have money and can afford those healthy options. Those are the people That usually say the dumb comments like you said.
By healthier I didn’t mean organic. Instead of Tatar Tots, buy a 10 lb bag of potatoes. Instead of processed chicken tenders buy fresh chicken tenders. Instead of the hungry man dinners, buy the hamburger, gravy packet, canned vegetable and fresh potatoes … it is cheaper buying fresh
I agree because I do this myself, but I have to ask—do you truly know if your past clients could cook a meal from scratch? Have you noticed how grocery prices have skyrocketed over the past few years with inflation and all these accidents affecting our food supply? If you’re advocating for certain foods to be restricted—which, to some extent, isn’t a bad idea—why not ensure that people on EBT get a little extra support to buy fresh ingredients? And why not suggest cooking and budgeting classes to help them succeed? I personally believe that EBT benefits should be limited for able-bodied, single individuals without children, but families should have access to what they need. Many parents rely on quick and convenient options like Lunchables and chips for their kids. Providing resources and education could help them make healthier, budget-friendly choices.
You want to put a blanket fix over a complicated problem according to just your knowledge and experience.
I’m disabled and I like to cook good healthy meals. But there’s this thing called prepping. It wears me out to prep a meal. Then there’s cooking and cleaning up afterwards. Sometimes it takes me a whole day to finish making one meal because of my health. I have to pause and rest a lot. Everything you showed that you say is cheaper takes prepping. Also, most of those things aren’t the whole meal. Most people don’t know how to figure out what to cook from scratch. It takes imagination to figure out how to cook with what you have on hand sometimes. This issue is way more complicated than you make it seem.
Another thing. When my kids were young, there was a time when I couldn’t work, or I didn’t get paid enough. I bought my kids’ birthday cakes with SNAP. They would not have had birthday cakes if I hadn’t been able to buy them because of someone who thinks they know what’s better for me and my kids than I do, and who regulated what kinds of foods I could buy according to their own limited knowledge of life that doesn’t include being poor and/or disabled.
I would also buy the hungry man XL dinners on SNAP and split them between my two kids and myself when I was unable to cook because of health reasons.
Maybe instead of micromanaging what people eat, maybe we should fight to stop these companies from putting poison in our foods and making healthier options more accessible and affordable.
I also think we should criminalized and prosecute companies who purposely put chemicals in our foods to cause addiction to those foods.
The agency I work for provide cooking classes if they want to attend. The clients I worked with were higher functioning and were able to cook at home. Our other clients get in home support where help with cooking is given.
I don’t see any circumstance where there should be exceptions …. Especially in family situations. Kids will copy what they see. Generational obesity and health issues are being instilled by allowing this “food” to be purchased with EBT/SNAP. Fresh is healthier and cheaper.
More cooking classes in school would be beneficial. The younger they learn the better.
Sir, I couldn’t agree with you more! Healthy, simple meals are not as complicated as one thinks, but do take a little more time and effort than the fat and salt laden convenience foods and snacks that are making our nation one of the most obese, unhealthy nations in the world. We have gotten very lazy, spoiled, and entitled.
I’ve been a Holistic Health Practitioner for 30 years. So I’m the first person that knows people need to eat healthy foods. However, I do not agree with giving Government even MORE Control then they already have!
This is America and if people qualify for snap they should be free to choose what they want to eat, not the Government!
Besides, a high percentage of foods today are garbage. What about gluten and the glyphosate they are poisoning people with? What about the poisonous seed oils that are in most things? Diet drinks so there’s no sugar, what about the aspartame that’s poison?
There’s no reason my tax money should enable a diabetic family buy four 24 packs of Mountain Dew every first of the month! Nor should I be financing their ice cream, ding dongs, or potato chips!
The government restricts tobacco and alcohol. I have no problem restricting junk food!
First, grocery prices need to come down. Second, not everyone knows how to cook HEALTHY food, even if they bought healthy options. Third, not everyone has time or the energy to cook healthy food. My fiance and I eat very heathy and we meal prep. 85-90% of our diet is healthy food. But we also buy frozen pizza for those days we dont feel like cooking or we dont have anything prepared. You limiting “junk food” won’t necessarily help these families like you think it might. Also, what determines “junk food” because a lot of things at the store are heavily processed and filled with crap. You’d have to limit junk food to things like chips and sweets because if its too broad, you could call hamburger helper or a frozen lasagna junk food simply because you dont have to make everything by hand. Ultimately, you cant control what other people do and by limiting “junk food” you are being too controlling. People need to be educated on how to eat healthy and how to make eating healthier not seem like such a chore - meal prepping has helped us a ton, but it does take a lot of time and energy.
Okay, I see you love more Government Control over Americans. Why don’t I see you passionate about the Billions and Billions and Billions of Dollars that are being given to the UK, and other Countries that hate us? How about we start with that?
Im not in support of all the money in foreign aid, nor the billions to Ukraine. EBT/SNAP prohibits tobacco and alcohol. There’s no reason it can’t prohibit soda and junk food. These recipients are getting tax payer money. It’s free to them. There should be strings attached. Otherwise, we are just fueling the pharmaceutical industrial complex.
It would be nice for prices to come down, but what does that matter?! EBT/SNAP is adjusted to cost of living. These recipients are getting free food paid for by tax payers. There should be restrictions. We are enabling generational obesity. This leads to more doctor visits and medical costs. I’m sure the pharmaceutical companies love this! Maybe that’s the plan?
It matters because healthy food is expensive. As a family of 2, we spend 200-250 on groceries every week for our healthy diet… for 2 adults. Let alone adding children in the mix. During COVID we had SNAP and we got 400 a month… it doesnt go by the cost of living, FYI. It goes by household size and income. Do you know how this works? Have you ever had SNAP or know someone personally who has it? Or is this just you assuming. Because at one point, my fiance got his job back after COVID and our income finally went up (and not significantly) and our SNAP benefits when down significantly. Groceries have gone up 3x the amount it was 4 years ago… where have you been? Lol. Also, idk why you seem to be assuming that if we did control what people bought more on food stamps, that this would somehow make America a healthier country… lol. Do you know how many Americans that dont have these benefits and still eat like crap? Like honestly, what makes you think, logically, that controling food stamps will make America any healthier nation? You wouldnt be stopping them from eating junk food or McDonalds. Seems that you ultimately, you dont care about the health of these people so much as you don’t want to pay for their food with your taxpaying dollars. Sorry Charlie, but you are and you will… healthy food or junk food. So you might as well get over that. Also, I vote for less government control. That is exactly what Trump has been pushing and yet seems to be exactly whar you are for? The government should have no say in what we choose to eat. They should however, lower grocery prices so that healthy food is more afforable. You’re barking up the wrong tree.
