More than 70 countries world wide have a form of national service , many of them large countries it can be done.
I understand the value of national service in building discipline, character, and pride in our country. However, not everyone is suited for military service due to factors like physical or mental health conditions, personal or religious beliefs, or discomfort with combat roles. To improve this, we should offer alternative service options, such as working in AmeriCorps, disaster relief, or community development. This would still promote the values of hard work and dedication, while allowing every citizen to contribute in ways that align with their abilities and beliefs.
Again I understand that and a true medical issue would be obviously be void from national service. But again I repeat myself the military has many branches from administration to mechanic to pretty much any job you can think of nurses , drs etc so to say it would not be suitable to everyoneās belief or abilities is like saying they can never hold a job ever. Not all military is weapons related. This surely would strengthen America, promote respect and discipline in our youth and give them some work experience as well as training.
Defense of country purely means applying a person to work for the defense of country be that administrative work through to combat everything in between.
A better solution would be to not make it mandatory, and maybe just for men as well taking that 4 million to 2 million.
I think itās a good idea and would benefit a lot of young men, especially those who have been brain washed into the LGBT community and troubled kids. The issue is those are also the people you probably donāt want manning your army, itās a tough balance.
I disagree itās a better solution not to make it mandatory or that women be excluded.
I agree it would definitely help those who have been brainwashed which is why it should be all and like I have said there is a myriad of jobs in this umbrella.
Just in a regulated purposeful way. Being taught to get up go for a run eat go to work learn something be united is the basis of national service to be productive for you country instead of an entitled brat .
Assuming you read the Finnish conscription system link, Iām saying I donāt have a grasp on how women currently fulfill the Finnish constitutional obligation to participate in national defense. It is clear about males and āmilitaryā service, but not women. In the US and abroad, there are opportunities to serve in National Defense that do not require being part of the military and on the front line. Cyber Terrorism for example. My focus is not on the woman aspect of the conversation but rather the Finnish conscription system model itself.
I was thinking of developing an American model not using necessarily the Finnish model that was just an example.
Iām 100% with you on that! I was in Finland recently and appreciated their process in that regard. Bringing young adults up with love and pride of country is essential if we are going to retain the robust nation that our founders awarded us! Hopefully we can break the cycle of the increasing number of US Haters that have been indoctrinated through the education system for the last several decades.
I like the idea of individuals younger than 30 being charged of a crime to have the choice of an alternative to incarceration which would be to join our military and complete a successful tenure of service. If they fail to complete 4 years they go straight to prison and serve their sentence. Most would get the education, discipline, and give them a way to become a successful citizen. Some states already do this. Others do not.
The ideal is at 18 they do national service so hopefully they will learn respect , responsibility and will be less likely to commit crimes
I agree with that.
I propose switching the focus to the national guard instead of the US military.
Please hear me out on this. Itās not a common reasoning that Iāve seen before.
I disagree with mandatory enrollment in US military service by US citizens because we canāt control our government warmongers from abusing our insane amounts of military power for selfish reasons around the world.
I only recently changed my mind on Select Service and programs like the one proposed because these programs will be abused by the military industrial complex/government complex to send troops wherever because the military participants, willing or not, will be required by law to participate.
I am 100% for all the outcomes you laid out, and I even agree that mandatory participation in the US military would serve to those ends. We simply canāt risk what those in charge of that kind of power would do with it if they had millions of guaranteed enrollees, and through the draft, the ability to get millions more.
I was first exposed to this risk in the context of the recent changes to the Selective Service (men will now be automatically registered, and the laws are being teed up now to automatically register women as well). Iām pro-American Military and was very much for this kind of proposal for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I was also of the opinion that āIf we need it, I want us to be able to get itā but then it was pointed out that the threat isnāt that Americans wouldnāt answer the call to volunteer for a just war; itās that the neo-cons and others heavily financially incented to make sure the USA is in a war of some kind, and preferably several, would absolutely abuse that power, if they had it, to force people to go to war in order to make them more money.
We are simply too powerful a nation to let that kind of thing happen.
Demanding the US military be populated with volunteers only (ending the draft permanently) is a kind of check on our governmentās ability to abuse those forces.
Hence, I propose to switch the focus of the policy to the National Guard service where these forces are focused on more domestic affairs and foreign humanitarian based efforts instead of outright wars.
I would like to suggest this as a pathway to citizenship for those who are vetted and want to become citizens. When a person comes from another country they need to understand OUR government and OUR rights as citizens and adjust their beliefs and behaviors accordingly. Many people donāt even understand a safe and free society .
I see no issue with your proposal, and I actually think it is an excellent idea more of domestic military. Same training etc
