In Iceland all citizens speak the native language as well as English. A requirement of living there for more than one year is learning the Icelandic language. I believe we should implement that here. In South Florida, there are many areas that it is expected of you to speak Spanish because of the mass immigration from Cuba/Latin America. If an America goes to any of those countries it is expected of them the speak Spanish, so why aren’t we implementing this of these immigrants?
I think a more realistic approach is to mandate a common language for government, and possibly some sectors of the economy, i.e. banking and advertising.
It isn’t realistic or enforceable to mandate someone learn a language.
You are supposed to be able to speak English upon applying for green card. To become a citizen you supposedly must speak English .
I agree 110%. Americas official language is English. If people want to live in America they must assimilate to our language and customs.
legal immigrants should first learn to understand and speak english to get a green card. they should pass a proficiency test before getting their green card. if they fail the test, they should study more until they pass the test. and no translations to spanish or any other language should be done inside the USA. automated calls should not have an option to press 2 for spanish or all printed media should be in english etc.
