Diastasis recti: A condition in which the large abdominal muscles separate.
This occurs during the time of pregnancy. When your baby grows, your uterus continues to expand and push against the stomach wall. And sometimes, this can cause the connective tissue between your abdominal muscles to widen. Typically in the second or third trimester when your baby is growing. The end result is abdominal muscles that are left with a space down the midline of your stomach creating a bulge. For most moms, this will resolve itself in the weeks after having her baby. Unfortunately, that is not the case for all women. Some women experience their abdominal muscles stay separated. Most cases you can do physical therapy to resolve this issue if it’s not a severe separation. In other cases, it is a severe separation and can only be fixed with surgery. There are no insurances that will cover this surgery even when it is medically needed. And can cost up to $15,000 or more in upfront payment. Most of us who medically need this surgery cannot afford it. Diastasis recti is painful and uncomfortable. Without the surgery, when medically needed, the chances of a fatal hernia increases greatly, and I believe this should be covered by insurance when it is medically needed.
