Once you pay off your mortgage you shouldn’t have to pay to keep your house. It should be yours and unable to be taken from you. Pay for gas, heat, water etc, but the house should be able to stay yours if you paid it off.
I’m not sure this should be a national policy. All property taxes are at the local level.
I added a Feedback item to add city/county/state/federal categories as a second dimension for exactly this reason.
But I see this as something like “School Choice”; it’s an overarching observation even if it gets implemented at a more local level.
I haven’t quite seen how to go about having a “policy concept debate” represented on the site so far…
As long as there is property tax you never truly own your home. We, as Americans, are taxed on everything from multiple directions. Taxation is out of control. It is against every fiber of my being to submit part of my income to support things totally in contradiction to my religious and moral belief. There should be a law to protect the citizens from being fleeced by our own government. Reagan did a study and his conclusion was that the taxes was not needed for the military. If the taxes do not go to the military, where do they go? I have to be accountable for my spending. Why is it that the government has a blank check with NO accountability as to where they spend the money we send?
