I would propose that new Secretary of Transportation look at major changes to our highway system. The German Autobahn has only 2.7 deaths per billion km driven vs 7.2 in the US (2019). Converse with German transportation officials on how we can emulate the German Autobahn as close as possible. Statistically it would save a lot of lives. If anyone has ever driven the Autobahn, you will know that there are very strict rules on occupying the left lane which actually get followed by its citizens. Here in the US is “generally” assumed the left lane is the fast lane, but it is very common for people to just sit in the left lane driving slowly. This then results in the people who want to drive faster making more erratic lane changes to pass and causes frustration. Clearer and more heavily enforced rules on the left lane are desperately needed. This seems trivial in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to everything going on nowadays. I do believe these changes and trying to mimic the autobahn as much as possible will save many lives in the long run.
