If Driver’s Ed must be required to get a driver’s license, local governing authorities for drivers license agencies should give grants to schools who provide it to lessen the economic burden for families.
To fund this, the excess public school funds returned each year, or the excess Dept of Motor Vehicles funds, could be utilized rather than being lost.
In NC, kids can take drivers ed either through their public school or with a private company. Public schools are frequently backlogged because of short funding or low staffing. Private schools are usually $400-$600 or more.
The public fund for driver’s education is insufficient. Either:
- Incentivize more driver’s ed instructors by paying more, helping to fix the backlog in the school system
- Incentivize people to take advantage of private driving schools by giving a grant or scholarship, to help them get their license
Currently the public school system budgets $209 per 9th grade student to take the drivers ed class. Why not extend that same amount as a grant or scholarship to those who want to put it towards getting their license faster by going to a private driving school?
