Agree especially in public schools, which are paid with taxes already
To be fair, Michelle Obama tried that and got raked over the coals for it by the right
agreed. school food quality is disgusting. unfortunately, we have an entire population that loves unhealthy, low quality food. think its better to fill the childrenâs empty bellyâs, even if its not the best. similarly, the food quality is so poor, best they can do is give it away. who would buy it? . . . the extremely poor in moneys, the extremely poor in education, the unassuming taxpayer and children.
Universal school choice would solve this without further fed meddling. The feds give parents some figure (e.g., $6k) and the parents can pick a school where tuition covers lunch.
(That $6k figure would be combined with great states that have universal choice, which would combine to be over $12kâway overâŚ)
I would disagree with this. Parents should be responsible for feeding their own children. Taxpayers should not foot the bill for this. I also disagree with prisons giving inmates free food off the taxpayer dime. I believe inmates should be required to work while they serve their term⌠and work within the prison, not outside of it.
We have this Colorado and they are terrible. Itâs increased our taxes and the food is terrible. Most students hate it and end up bringing their own lunches if they can.
I completely agree. I am a special education teacher in CA and the lunches are unacceptable. The amount of added sugar and all the food (except fruit and veggies) are processed packaged junk. We wonder why autism and ADHD are on the rise, start by looking at the food. Itâs time we undo Michelle Obamaâs âhealthyâ lunch program and revamp with whole unprocessed food for our children.
If your state wants to vote for it and fund it thatâs fine, but this is not a federal issue.
I agree to an extent but if you force kids to be at school then their food should be paid for. Thatâs like me making you go clean my lawn and then forcing you to pay me for it.
The thing is that if they are forced to be in school then their lunch should be paid for. I canât force you to be somewhere and then just say pay me if you want to eat. Also with the prison statement, prisoners do work but get paid unfairly which also leads to the topic of abuse of prison labor and the potential starvation of prisoners under government supervision which I believe is against a bunch of laws and regulations.
I agree that the typical âhealthyâ school lunch program is anything but healthy. Making your own childrenâs school lunches is the best optionâfor more reasons than just ensuring they are healthy and well fed. Kudos to you.
I was a school board member when a national effort was made to serve âhealthyâ meals, spearheaded by Michelle.
How did children react? Most of the food ended up in the garbageâeven fresh apples. Such a waste. So instead of improving health and introducing them to new foods, we had hungry students.
I also think that they should not just give them a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a cheese sandwich. It is very embarrassing and the other kids know itâs because they donât have lunch money and then want to pick on them and bully them. They should have the same lunch as everyone else.
School lunches should be free for all pre-school through grade 12. Not junk food but nutritious fruits, vegetables and meat / protein. No chemical food nor fake lab created food.
Sounds like a good idea but how are we paying for this. 49M students assume $3 per meal $147M a day over $26B a year. In 2024 over 40% of house holds in America made over $100K. We really need to be focusing on the people need help not blanket pay for everyone. New taxes or increases in existing ones will hit everyone including senior on fixed incomes.
interesting the unprocessed food went in the garbage. did you try eating the apple? was it an old pithy apple?
I grew up in Michiganâs apple belt and know a good one when I see it. These were fresh eating apples.
It wasnât just the apples going into the trash, but entire meals.
wow, that is weird. do you think the kids would eat them if peeled, cut, cored? can you share if the meals are dispensed like a cafeteria with kids waiting in line for a tray of items they choose?
Some may, but additional staff time required to peel, core, and cut up apples isnât feasible.
Yes, as is typical in schools, the food is served cafeteria-style.
I work in a school that has free meals for all the kids. The fresh fruit tastes good. The kids are made to take a fruit or veggie whether they want it or not which is ridiculous! They discard it right after walking past the cashier. With the growing cost of groceries we shouldnât force them to take something they donât want just so they can throw it away. This includes cartons of milk or juice.
thank you for answering my next question. seems to me the food should be dispensed as desired by the child. i have seen some of the food these days and would not care to eat it, but back when i was in school we had cooks preparing a hot meal for us. it was not free, but it was good. sometimes we would have some processed foods, like hot dogs or corn dogs, burritos.
