This is not asking for a hand out for anyone but a hand up. I have an adopted sister who passed away and her husband was raising their two sons, 12 and 10 at the time. Two years after the passing of their mother they lost their father to a heart attack. Initially both boys moved to live with a cousin in our family and his wife. The oldest of the boys was not happy in the new school and wanted to come back to where he felt most comfortable and it was decided I would take guardianship of him. Both boys have thrived and adjusted extremely well given the circumstances of losing both parents. They have both received SS benefits but at the age of 18 or when they graduate high school their benefits will end. The oldest of the two turned 18 this year and will graduate in May of 2025, his benefits will end on the day of graduation. My policy proposal is SS benefits should continue as long as they are furthering their education. If they choose to join the workforce immediately and not go to college, I believe they can manage on their own and benefits should stop.
