Establish Diplomatic Relations with Perceived Enemies of the United States

The time to end the Cold War and disband NATO is long overdue. The Soviet Union dissolved itself in 1991 and ended the Warsaw Pact the same year. However, within a decade NATO began to expand beyond the German border and is continuing its expansion today. Why? What threat does NATO face that it has not itself generated? The latest NATO bloodbath is in Ukraine, where more than 600,000 Ukrainians are known dead, and more are dying every day. A peace agreement was signed and on the table within a month after the special military observation began. Yet, NATO interfered and allowed the military operation to continue and expand.

Animosity against North Korea extends back more than 7 decades. While president, Donald Trump attempted to establish economic and diplomatic relations with North Korea, but was stymied by Cold Warriors in his Administration. Enough! North Korea is willing and ready to negotiate good relations with the United States, and the United States should encourage these negotiations.

In 1979 Iran chose to become a theocratic state. The Iranian revolution that ensued was opposed by the United States. Hostilities continue to this day, with no end in sight.

In the interests of international peace, trade, and cultural cooperation, the United States should establish diplomatic relations with Russia, North Korea, and Iran. No substantial basis for sanctioning these countries exists today. As independent, sovereign states, they are like all civilized countries – capable of signing and abiding by international treaties and recognized rules of conduct. They deserve the respect due them by the United States.
