I want to advocate for more difficult homework, more difficult but more fulfilling homework.
This is an observational report on my time as a student of what I liked and disliked. Imediate change is not what I am looking for if you decide to upvote. I want an in depth study into what the propisition might hold. This isn’t about- why homework in its self is bad, I would argue to say it’s an attempt at foundation, an attempt at structural learning. Homework in itself is not the antigonsist worksheets in itself ar not either. They are a good aproach to learning and study. Hands on activities are about the same as homework except they give children adolescent and pubescent children creative thinking challanges, this observational report is neither against or for hands on work but proposes a change in the class room again evolving the structural side of education. This observation isn’t impearically true this is why I am going to start out by asking a simple question.
Why do worksheets (multichoice, creative thinking, sumerizations) use the same logistics as tests?
My belief is that it is a good aproach in preperations for testing children on Units and Chapters.
I wouldn’t say that any of you would disagree with this assesment. In my time as a student there was an issue (among many we need to tackle) about those said worksheets. One they are extremely boring to fill out; two the time it takes to find corresponding words within the chapters (the relevant objective answer of the questioning ). The horizoned point 1 is an important point to me schooling shouldn’t just come down to ticking boxes I’ve filled out many forms in life and the information on them is barely recognizable from the next. Once you fill out one form you’ve filled out dozens, this fact doesn’t change. The thing about school is that a lot of the work relies on the students to teach themselves beyond a (far too) simple foundation. Some children won’t be willing to do things they aren’t graded on. The latter point 2 is about how the worksheets are cheated out of foundational study, Foundational study is the embarkement of new objective knowledge, terms, and core information to the chapter itself. Skim reading is something we’re all familiar with, and we know skim reading isn’t for learning purposes, and so why rely on a time consuming system that is boring and one that relies on the students to further familiarize with that information with no grade to support.
Let me re-state the problem that I’ve found in a more concrete way. Once a student is graded on a boring worksheet, Why are we forcing our children to then do additional work on top of what they’ve been graded for. Children do not get graded for familiarizing themselves with the chapter until the test itself.
With a non concrete concept like doing something now will help you down the line is far to foreign for children.
Why aren’t we using methods that familiarize the children with the homework in totality, or close to it? One such method would be to use Chapter Reports instead of worksheets.
Worksheets are a foundational method but it would be more accustomed to say that it gets children to flat ground and they must dig the hole themselves fill it and build a house.
Chapter Reports are simply recording the events that unflod after the flat ground is given to them (as the lecture), and in turn grading for the work they have done in totality given they’ve accomplished those studies.
If I were to task you to do several worksheets everyday and you knew ahead of that, you are to memorize the information most of you wouldn’t ever memorize it because simply doing the homework is enough to pass the grade. That causes an issue fo rhtose of us who do pass based on our hard work beyond the stupidity that’s taking place in front of us.
Chapter Reports are intended to be a subject of study and how it effects the classroom. Immediate change would be ridiculous, and would serve parctically no point without proof of positive changes in foundational learning methods with hope to improve testing results. Right now we all know that america’s educational system has ineffectual methods of teaching other wise no one would be buying flash cards and spending hours studying outside of class to memorize the cycle of the moon, or the order of the months, or the definition of erosion and what the effects are on natural banks of a river.
What we need to do? We need to proof a better system of foundational study and implement, that, in replacement to worksheets. By proofing a new system of education that leads to better testing results we’ll no longer be the highest paying country in education and semitanously the worst at testing, well be the best, the best at everything like we ought to be in a 1st world country.
