Many insurance companies institute gag clauses for providers. For example, if you are picking up a prescription that costs $5 off the shelf, the pharmacy will give it to you for $5 if you do not have insurance. However, the second you disclose you have insurance, the pharmacy is prohibited from telling you that this medication only costs $5 and you will be forced to pay your copay or the insurance cost which is often higher than what the medicine actually would cost you out of pocket. This does not just apply to medications but almost every billable item you would receive for treatment (band aids, shots, casts etc.). This practice should be outlawed immediately.
