Ban chlorinated pools mandate saltwater

Chlorinated indoor pools are unhealthy to absorb through skin and to breathe the fumes.
Please mandate all YMCAs to have saltwater pools.

That is a good suggestion if one wants to subscribe to it; however, it is not the government’s place to “mandate” what goes into owners’ pools, even if the owner is a non-profit or corporation. At most, if the YMCA wants to continue using chlorine in pools, they might put up a sign on the pool entrance stating that chlorine is added to the pool, so that those who are sensitive to chlorine can avoid swimming in the pool. This would be the proper approach, since most people do not mind the chlorine.

Just how bad is the chlorine they use in pools? If you have good data about the dangers of chlorinated pool water, I’m receptive.

Common bleach (Na - HClO) is pretty regularly used to purify drinking water, so I’ve always assumed it’s mostly safe at low concentrations. I’m sure the dosage is higher in swimming pools though.

Salt water is full of chlorines, that’s how it works.

Correct…when NaCl (Sodium Chloride = Salt) dissolves in water, the weak covalent bonds between the sodium and the chlorine atoms break apart in solution, causing Chlorine ions which act to disinfect like chlorine pool additives. The drawback is that salt is highly corrosive to metals, including plumging lines and parts.

“Chlorinated pools” in common speech means using bleach (sodium hypochlorite), although speaking literally you’re correct. The hypochlorite (HClO-) ion holds together in solution with water, so it behaves differently.

I don’t have an opinion on this topic, I just want to help people avoid confusion.
