Where possible animal based agriculture should also be incorporated even if it’s just chickens and/or rabbits. The manure is very good for soil health and it teaches kids how to care for other life forms. You could offer high school students jobs to care for the animals and plants on non-school days.
I agree. Chickens would fit in nicely, especially if we partner with them to produce compost. Permaculture methods can be introduced to children at a young age so that they become second nature to them by the time they enter high school.
Here’s a short, 3 minute video by Geoff Lawton that describes chickens & composting very well.

Yes, this would be helpful in many ways besides just providing food. That’s a life skill they would be learning.
Yes I agree! College and university students would benefit greatly from this program.
The surplus veggies & eggs would be available for purchase to the local community at the on-campus student-farmer’s market. This would foster entrepreneurship skills in the students
Thoughts?
I work in a school kitchen and most the kids don’t know which item is a fruit, a vegie a grain or dairy. It very be great if they knew the difference. If they had to work to help grow it maybe they wouldn’t be so eager to throw it in the garbage!
Did you know there is a specific content area called Agriculture Education that is allowed in MANY schools across the United States. It is an actual major at many state university that allows adults to complete a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture Education where they can obtain a teaching license and teach 7-12 students about agriculture. It is a Career and Technologies program that gain some government funding. It also has a CTSO called FFA where it is a premier leadership organization that builds career skills to make students more employable and knowledgeable of specific career fields within agriculture. A school farm is a perk some of these programs have. Why don’t you start there? Make agriculture education a requirement for graduation in each state. The many different specific courses I are already outlined with state standards and a state tests.
As a current Agriculture Educator and FFA Advisor, this is so true. Don’t start a school farm with no standards or specific regulated outcomes. FFA and agriculture education has been around since 1928 and it needs to be in every school. Don’t make a farm, make a class!
Imagine if the children themselves were responsible for bringing the fresh nonGMO veggies and eggs! What a difference that would make in their “education” wouldn’t it?!
Or both!
Yes!! A farm for every community or city!
